5 Vital Signs of A GREAT Auctioneer: 1.> Understands your Merchandise and the Required Marketing for your Property If your auctioneer asks you lots of questions about how you would like your items marketed and where you would like them marketed then you can rest assured that your sale will be a success. Remember that marketing is expensive and a direct approach to interested buyers should be your auctioneers top priority in the weeks leading up to your auction. Your auctioneer should be able to look at any piece of your property and be able to briefly describe it and know where to get more information should he or she need it. MARKETING IS VITAL TO A SUCCESSFUL AUCTION! 2.> Presents and Conducts Him/Her Self as a Professional Auctioneering is a skilled profession that has the potential to make or break Clients. You only get one chance to have a successful auction. A true professional will know before your auction that it is going to be a success because they have done their homework and studied the products to be sold. They will know how to mix the right amounts of marketing, staff, product preperation, and salesmanship, to make your auction a success. Professionalism will show from the first contact made until years after the auction. PROFESSIONALISM IS VITAL TO A SUCCESSFUL AUCTION! 3.> Is a member of State and National Auctioneer Associations Auctioneering isn't the largest profession in America but it very well could be one of the oldest. Auctioneers are great at working with people and they use each others information to keep each other out of "tight spots." The best places to keep in touch with other auctioneers is via trade organizations like the NAA (National Auctioneers Association) and their state and even some local chapters. Check to see if your auctioneer is a member of these organizations by going to their respective websites, and search for their name in the members section. If your auctioneer isn't a member ask them why they are not, they had better have a valid reason! MEMBERSHIP IS VITAL TO A SUCCESSFUL AUCTION! 4.> Has the desire to get the Latest and Greatest Education Auctioneering today is so vastly different from a time not too long ago. Could you have imagined an online only auction in 1990. Today auctions are conducted in so many ways and in many different formats. If your auctioneer has current training and has adjusted his/her business model to reflect these current trends your auction will be a success. Auctions aren't just for junk anymore, auctioneers are selling multi-million dollar properties as a FIRST attempt to market them, not after they have sat on the market and been beat down by near abandonment. This is possible because auctioneers have the knowledge to successfully find buyers for items because they are Educated. EDUCATION IS VITAL TO A SUCCESSFUL AUCTION! 5.> Always works under a contract Contracts spell out all the details of a successful auction. This simple piece of paper carries all the complexities of an auction's parameters. If you don't have a contract what do you have? Contracts make everything easy, not difficult. If you are not sure who was supposed to pay for the marketing, look in the contract, what was the commission rate, look in the contract, there will not be anything vague about who is responsible for what. This simple piece of paper is essential to a successful auction because it has the final say in all matters of your auction. While contracts may have a juridicial feel to them I would bet they have kept more cases out of court then in them. The answer to the question: " Would you like to put this auction under contract today so that we are both protected?" Is Yes! CONTRACTS ARE VITAL TO A SUCCESSFUL AUCTION! Consider your auction and visualize it on sale day. Has your Auctioneer done all the right thing to make your sale a success? Does it have all of these Signs? THEY ARE VITAL TO A SUCCESSFUL AUCTION!
